The Guild of Taxidermists
So who are The Guild of Taxidermists? They are an organisation formed
in 1976 by top exponents of the art to :-
Improve the standard of work that was on the market at the time
Project the legal trade and liaise with relevant authorities.
It is the only organisation in the U.K. to write a qualification
in the subject and holds Seminars in England and Scotland every
year along with an AGM and 3 day Conference.
Over the years with their members now producing top quality work, more
and more time is spent on the liaison role. The Guild represents the
trade at the highest level, consulting both with the Government (DEFRA)
and Enforcement Authorities. Many of the regulations and policies now
in force have been amended or formed due to the Guild's input.
As stated the Guild co-operates closely with the enforcement authorities
such as the Police and HM.C/E. It also has a close relationship with
organisations such as the RSPB, RSPCA, SSPCA, TRAFFIC ( the WWF investigation
arm) and many others, assisting them in cases where a minority bring
the trade into disrepute. It will continue to strive to protect the
legal operator and gain a respectability, that when done correctly the
art deserves.
The Guild is open to all who are interested in the art, be they
collectors, traders, novices or experts. All its members operate
within a code of conduct and are subject to its constitution. Members
receive a quarterly newsletter keeping them informed of legal and other
matters along with an annual publication (The Journal). Two Seminars
are held annually, one usually in the South and the other in the North
along with a Spring AGM/Conference. The three day AGM/Conference is
the main event with taxidermists from as far afield as Europe and the
United States lecturing on various techniques. Various competitions
can be entered and the Award Ceremony is the finale of the event. Both
Seminars and Conference are open to all members and are especially useful
for those learning the art.
