UK Taxidermy law

Do you own or collect items of Taxidermy.

If you do, then by virtue of that fact, you are in possession of.
A lot of people get worried over this. The situation is not helped when various wildlife welfare groups add to the confusion by issuing statements such as "It is illegal to be in possession of a live or dead" whatever.

The numerous regulations all have one thing in common and in one way or another state, "that it is an offence for any person to have in his possession or control any live or dead wild animal/bird etc, or any part of, or anything derived from such a creature,

UNLESS HE/SHE CAN SHOW THAT THE CREATURE WAS NOT TAKEN IN CONTRAVENTION OF THE REGULATIONS."

One regulation puts it simply as " possession of a CITES specimen is not subject to control." In other words it is O.K. to be in possession of any specimen, protected or not, providing you can prove (or satisfy any questions asked) that it was obtained within the law in force at the time of acquisition, furthermore you do not require a licence. (Licenses may be required if you are a recognised trader - see under Taxidermists - in this section). So, as far as members of the public are concerned, it is straight forward. If its legally obtained and you can substantiate that - no problem, you can keep it.
